'''Metal Detectors''

In Jonathan Levin High School I have many disagreements and things I dont like regarding to ''us'' the students. However the main thing I disagree with is the way the staff sometimes treat the students when doing the metal detector process. I dont like the use of metal detector but in a kind of way i understand that its for our safety. However what i diagree with the most is the way the staff members in charge of the metal detector talk to the students. The reason of why I say this is because when the students have to go through the metal detectors they for instance the security guards treat and talk to us as if we the students were criminals. Due that the school had problems with students before or years ago doesnt mean that they have the right to speak to ALL students as if they were some type of criminals or as if ALL student were to be caring sometype of threating weapon. For instance, when the securities talk to us the students they talk to us as like ''come on hurry up'' or "your ringing get your bags and go back around''. Basically, my main point is that the way they talk to the students is not proper even though they're doing their job because I personally think that if you have a job you talk to people properly and respectedly and not like criminals.

Yes, respect for all people is important. Do you think students respect the security officers? Try smiling and being extra polite, maybe it will change the atmosphere at the metal detectors.

Good thoughts... keep working.

Professionalism is extremely important when you work in security and those officers should know better. If you feel someone has crossed the line, you should note that particular school safety officer's name and bring the matter up with your guidance counsellor, AP, teachers, or whomever. Remember, these officers do not work for this school, but for the city and are representative of the NYPD. I am reminded of an incident that happened at the East Village High School in Manhattan just this last spring. The Principal of the school was arrested by school security for interfering with an officer that was removing a student from the property. All this occurred at 7:00 AM, and the student being removed was an honor role student. Someone who wanted to be at school early. You should always be respectful to school safety officers. Their job is not always easy. However, know that you have protections as well against your PROTECTORS.

I kind of agree with you that they should not be telling students to hurry up. It is part of there job that what they get paid to do so why should they be mad at us kids cause we taking our time. We take our time to make sure we do not ring so we do not have to go back around. I think we as students should respect them and they should the same.
